CareSource one of largest HMOs in nation
DAYTON, Ohio, Dec. 1, 2003 -- CareSource, Ohio’s largest Medicaid managed health-care plan, is now the eighth-largest Medicaid HMO in the nation, according to a report by InterStudy, a leading researcher and publisher for the managed-care industry.
CareSource, based in Dayton, has about 321,000 members in 13 counties in Ohio.
The report also said CareSource was the second-fastest-growing Medicaid HMO and the fifth-fastest-growing HMO of any type in the nation from July 2002 to January 2003. During that time, CareSource added 53,723 members, a growth rate of 25.8 percent.
“We are gratified that so many people have chosen to join CareSource,” said Pamela Morris, CareSource president and chief executive officer. “We think we offer a health-care plan that can truly make a difference in their lives.”
CareSource’s growth is all the more striking when compared to changes in the rest of the HMO industry, according to the report. From July 2002 to January 2003, enrollment in all HMOs declined by 5.6 percent, while Medicaid HMO enrollment grew by 13 percent. CareSource’s growth rate was almost twice that of other Medicaid managed-care plans.
InterStudy’s HMO Industry Report was based on a survey of 454 HMOs across the country, including 188 Medicaid HMOs with a combined 14.5 million members. HMO representatives answered detailed questions about their plans’ characteristics, products and enrollment. InterStudy publishes its HMO Industry Report twice a year.
