CareSource Foundation Awards Grants

DAYTON, Ohio, December 12, 2007 -- The CareSource Foundation, launched last June, recently announced its sixth round of health care grant awards. The Foundation focuses funding on four key areas including issues of the uninsured, critical health trends, community health issues and broad colloaboration with other organizations and funders. Awards totaling $127,000 have been granted to the following 15 organizations:

  • American Heart Association:  $10,000 grant for the power to End Stroke/Go Red for Women program with emphasis on stroke prevention, awareness, diagnosis and treatment for African-American women.
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters:  $8,000 grant to support mentorship with at-risk youth in Montgomery, Greene and Preble counties.
  • Darlene Bishop Home for Life:  $3,500 grant to provide basic needs and life skills training for young, pregnant women dealing with abuse or overcoming addiction.
  • Dayton Urban League:  $10,000 grant to engage and empower lower-income families through social, economic, job-training and nutritional support.
  • Elizabeth’s New Life Center:  $10,000 grant to provide affordable health and prenatal care for low-income women in Montgomery and surrounding counties.  
  • Goodwill Easter Seals:  $12,000 grant to provide free developmental screenings and follow-up support for children in regional daycare centers.
  • Hamilton County Lead Poisoning Prevention Collaborative:  $4,000 grant to help increase the blood lead testing rate in targeted areas of Hamilton county.
  • Holt Street Miracle Center: $4,000 grant to support the Kids Café program to combat hunger among low-income children, particularly those with a parent in residential drug and alcohol recovery centers.
  • Huron Hospital Foundation of the Cleveland Clinic Network:  $12,000 grant to increase capacity in the Lennon Diabetes Center
  • Legal Aid of Western Ohio:  $10,000 grant to create a medical-legal program for children in partnership with The Rocking Horse Center free clinic in Clark County.
  • The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society:  $5,000 grant to provide financial assistance for over 200 uninsured or underinsured cancer patients in southwestern Ohio.
  • Otterbein Homes:  $8,000 grant for benevolent care for senior adults residing in any of the Otterbein communities throughout Ohio
  • Prevent Blindness Ohio:  $18,000 grant to provide vision screening for almost 12,000 children and vision education and outreach to over 100,000 children, teachers and parents in the Dayton region.
  • Senior Resource Connection:  $7,500 grant to publish and distribute a comprehensive Senior Resource Guide with emphasis on access to affordable healthcare and special needs assistance.  
  • Womanline of Dayton:  $5,000 grant to support the “I Can Tell” sex abuse detection and prevention program.
