CareSource marks 40th anniversary of Medicaid
DAYTON, Ohio, July 26, 2005 – CareSource, Ohio’s largest Medicaid managed health care plan, will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Medicaid this week. Medicaid, the state and federal health insurance program for the poor, was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 30, 1965.
CareSource has long played an important role in Ohio’s Medicaid program. CareSource pioneered Ohio’s first mandatory Medicaid managed care plan in the Dayton area in 1989. As managed care expanded to additional counties, CareSource grew with it, opening offices in Columbus and Cleveland. CareSource also worked with the state in 2001 to create preferred option, in which Medicaid consumers are enrolled in a managed care plan unless they choose the fee-for-service program.
“CareSource is pleased to celebrate the positive impact of the Medicaid program on the families and children who are our members,” said President and CEO Pamela B. Morris. “We have been serving Medicaid consumers in Ohio for more than 16 years. Our top priority is the health of our members.”
In Ohio, Medicaid covers more than 1.6 million people, including 1 in 8 residents, 1 in 4 children, and more than 1 in 3 births. The program covers low-income families, children, pregnant women, and the aged, blind and disabled. Most Medicaid recipients live below the federal poverty level and have no other access to health care.
