CareSource Management Group wins Health Care Heroes award
DAYTON, Ohio, Oct. 21, 2005 – CareSource Management Group (CSMG), a leading public-sector managed care services company based in Dayton, Ohio, has won a 2005 Health Care Heroes award from the Dayton Business Journal. The award honors people and organizations that have had a positive impact on health care in our community.

The company was selected as a winner of the 2005 Health Care Heroes award because of its innovative approach to health care. CSMG and its health care plans have driven innovation in Medicaid managed care since they began. CareSource was Ohio’s first mandatory enrollment Medicaid managed care plan when it was launched in the Dayton area in 1989. The concept worked so well that Ohio expanded it to the Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland areas in the mid-1990s. CareSource is now the state’s largest Medicaid managed care plan, serving two-thirds of the market, and is the sixth-largest Medicaid managed care plan in the nation.
CSMG has partnered with government regulators, community agencies, and health care providers to positively impact the Medicaid program. For example, the company worked with state and federal regulators to create Preferred Option, in which Medicaid consumers in areas with only one health plan could be enrolled unless they opted out. After seeing the success of this program in Ohio, Medicaid officials in Michigan adopted it as well. The company was also a key player in the current expansion of Medicaid managed care across Ohio.
CSMG also worked with social service agencies across Ohio to create a series of Consumer Councils made up of health plan members, agency representatives, and CareSource staff. These councils have generated many ideas for how to better serve members, including creation of our Babies First program, which provides incentives for pregnant members and new mothers to get prenatal checkups and well-child exams.
Finally, the company has positively affected the community not just through its provision of health care, but through its philosophy of giving back. CSMG supports the community through its annual United Way fund drive. For the past two years in a row, it has been a Pacesetter company, raised a record amount in donations, and won the Pinnacle Award, the highest award bestowed on a donor organization by the United Way of the Greater Dayton Area. In addition, CSMG employees also hold the annual “Giving Tree,” a company-wide effort to provide gifts, food and other necessities to selected member families during the holiday season.
