2004 Press Releases

Community Choice Michigan awarded state Medicaid contract

OKEMOS, Mich., Sept. 7, 2004 – Community Choice Michigan, a nonprofit Medicaid managed health care plan, has been awarded a Medicaid contract for 2004-2006 from the Michigan Department of Management and Budget. The state has not only approved CCM to continue serving about 50,000 members in 28 counties, but also to move into 10 new counties as early as Oct. 1.

CCM’s success in receiving a Medicaid contract was the culmination of a series of steps that began when the CareSource Management Group, a health care management services company based in Dayton, Ohio, began management of the plan in August 2003. At the time, CCM was losing about $1 million a month and was in rehabilitation with the state. It is now projected to emerge from rehabilitation in September and have up to $12 million in reserve by the end of the year.

The 2004-2006 Medicaid contract sets the context for the plan’s future growth, said CCM Chief Executive Officer Karl Kovacs.

“We are thrilled that the state has recognized our hard work to stabilize and capitalize the plan over the past year, and we look forward to extending our services to Medicaid consumers in additional counties in Michigan,” Kovacs said. “CCM will continue to support the safety net mission of its 16 sponsoring Federally Qualified Health Centers and Michigan’s Medicaid managed care program.”

CCM’s next steps include further developing provider networks in its 10 new counties and spreading the word about CCM and its benefits to potential members. CCM covers all the same services as Medicaid fee-for-service, and offers extra benefits such as a member service center, 24-hour nurse hotline and transportation to medical appointments.

The counties CCM will continue to serve are Alcona, Allegan, Alpena, Antrim, Berrien, Calhoun, Cass, Charlevoix, Genesee, Gladwin, Grand Traverse, Iosco, Kalamazoo, Kalkaska, Kent, Leelanau, Manistee, Mason, Mecosta, Montmorency, Newaygo, Osceola, Presque Isle, Roscommon, Saginaw, St. Joseph, Van Buren and Wexford/Missaukee.

The counties CCM will be moving into include Arenac, Benzie, Cheboygan, Crawford, Lake, Oceana, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Otsego and Ottawa.

CCM is administered by CareSource Management Group, which offers a full spectrum of services for companies operating a managed health care plan. Among CSMG’s services are health plan administration, including claims processing and payment, case and medical management, provider relations, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance; a member service center and 24-hour nurse hotline; and financial consultation and turnaround. CSMG is built on the success of CareSource, a managed-health plan that serves almost 350,000 Medicaid consumers in Ohio.
